- A farmer sent his son into a field and told him to count
the number of sheep and ostriches in it. The son, who had just returned from
college, counted all the legs and added the result to the number of heads.
Nevertheless, his father, who knew that he had ostriches and sheep in the
field and nothing else, was able to deduce unambiguously from this grand
total exactly how many sheep and ostriches there were in the field. What is
the greatest number of animals there could have been, and how many sheep and
ostriches does this correspond to?
[Assume each ostrich and sheep had the correct complement of legs and that
the boy’s sums were correct.]
-
What is the next number in this sequence?
Why?
1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 15, 16 17, *.
