The Egg of Oz is a pale blue real beaut of an
opal a bit like the loose ones you see here, only a paler blue. It’s
currently on display behind smash-and-grab-proof glass in the foyer of
the Sydney Opera House. When someone went and donged the glass with a
gibber all it did was make a pretty pattern. Have a dekko and see if
you can spot the Egg of Oz still in there somewhere .

- You have two fuses each of which burns irregularly.
(So you can't assume, for example, that at half time half the length
of fuse has burnt.) The first takes 22 minutes to burn all the way
through, the second takes 8 minutes. Using just these two fuses and
a box of matches, how can you arrange to time exactly 9 minutes?

The only way Hugh Jappy-Tyte can keep
going between races is to snack on Thunder Chock (or Chunder
Rock, as the locals call the stuff). It
comes in an industrial-sized rectangular bar made up of
identical squares measuring 125 squares along one edge by 64
along the other. Any break Jappy-Tyte makes has to be along dividing
lines only and, whatever the size of the piece, the break has to go
all the way across. Only one piece may be broken at a time. What’s
the:
i) minimum
ii) maximum
number of breaks he has to make before the whole bar
is completely broken up into separate pieces?
